ok...i'm working on 540's......i can pump almost to the coping.......is it easier to do them straight up and down.....(i try it this way and bail at 360) or do i need to carve and do them?

i found it much easier to learn 540's with a carve as when you carve into it and out of it you don't have to spin as much. but some people seem to find them easier straight up and down so it's worth trying them both ways just to see which you prefer.

find your center og gravity and use it to its advantages you might find that you spin faster at the momnet up and down and youmight find carving into it easier ust find whats easier for you.

For a while i tried to just go straight up and down spin and it was harder for me to come out of the rotation and land. On the other hand when i carved and went flat it felt wierd but i spun alot faster.

I used to get killed learning those I would push out so bad. Theboringlife is right if carve enough it'll almost be like a 360.

i don't push out too much.......i think its more like i don't push enough and i can't spin horizontal yet.....cause i always end at 360 faceing the ramp....sliding back down on my hands and knees........but i'll have to try carving it next time i go.......

before my vert went down, i did a 540. i tend to jump outwards too much, even for a 360. but, what i did was spin like it was on the flat. the most important thing is to look for the ramp as soon as you spin 360.

i do mine straight, but if you carve, you'll find it easier because you're really spinning a 450, plus the trick looks better if you cover more ground. judges give higher score for people who use the whole ramp, not just part of it.

i found carving the way is the easiest way to learn 540s and then i just got them until they were straight, which on my small ramp makes it easier to link tricks. then i lost them for ages but have just started relearning them, natural and switch ... the improtant thing is to try and spot your land and not to flat bottom as that never ends well!

I'd like to learn how to slow my 5's down and do grabs other than safty.

It took me a while to a get a mute grab down, when you do those your center of gravity is a little off unlike a safety.

to spin slower, relax. the more relaxed you are, the slower you spin. the more tense you are, the faster you spin.

most often when i do 540's and 720's i tend to do an abstract 540 or 720 i dont know why for some reason over time it became a habit and gave me more control over my spins. On the otherhand the closest thing i have ever tried with a grab and spin is a mute bio 540 although it looked cool the landing hurt like shit cause i wasnt used to doing an off axis spin.

Where do you do all these 5's and 7's, box, mini or vert.? Do you have any video of you doing them?

um i live in and around the houston area i dont have the luxury of some who might have a vert ramp close by. the nearest vert ramp is at eisenbergs skatepark in plano. I havent been able to go to eisenbergs much because of gas for 1 my car tends to use alot of it. and when i do travel i usually feel up with gas about 4 maybe five times on trip to eisenbergs.

So i usually have to train on the next best thing thats close by which a vert wall where i work on flips and spins.

now for grinds the closest thing is a 9ft quarter pipe with a 2 ft extension its a ledge at southside and somtimes we have it by the bowl and ill move it over on top of the quarterpipe so i can work on my grinds and gives 11 ft with 2 feet vertical.

i usually just tuck and spin.......if i get a grab in...ok......but usually i'm trying to concentrate more on the spin......but maybe i'll start doing abstacts cause they seem like an easier "grab" and they look more stylish too....

ooo i love 540's the first place i learned was on a pyramid at Aon skatepark don't carve it if your learning if you don't have your center of gravity you could bail out bad sideways
